Toaster Update

It’s one month ago, since my toaster received the second prize at the Berner Design Award, three weeks since it was first posted on a blog and two weeks since I launched this site. I am absolutely amazed by the positive response from all over the world. There were several lifestyle magazines, some newspapers and a tv production company which asked to publish the toaster.

There have also been suggestions for improvement from potential users, like
- enhance the stack capability for larger families
- cartridges to add butter and jam
- to toast images or text like “good morning honey”
- to heat the ground plate to keep the toasts warm
- tandem toasting
- electricity through USB from a laptop (800 watts …?)

In the meantime I got a contact to a company that considers producing the toaster. Keep your fingers crossed that this comes true!

Could you answer me one important question? What would you pay for such a toaster?

Many thanks,
Othmar

I love most of those ideas u mentioned! especially the warming plate at the bottom, and adding text and such. I would probably pay $60 for this toaster. as long as it was made good quality and wouldn’t die and not toast very well after a year… seems like we go through a toaster a year at my house

It depends only in how much time it saves if compared with a regular toaster - how many sec/”pages” it needs?.. Design sells it, but real work sells much more..

A standard dual-slot toaster is US$15-20, but I would pay US$40-45 for this just to see it on my counter every morning.

  4. Dima Says:

Cool toaster, cool design! Would pay 50 Euro no problem. If it works with no glitches could go as high as 100. Let me know whan they are going to be on sale. Thanx.

  5. Barry Molenwijk Says:

I’d indeed say that 40-60 Euros would not be absurd for a device as handy as this.

  6. Mai Says:

I would pay 60-80€. It´s a great idea, good job! If it becomes true, let me know and I will think of you every morning!!!

  7. Lapacha Says:

around 60-75 euro. It is a great design, congratulations!

  8. Eveline Says:

100-125$ would be acceptable if the speed is comparable with regular toasters, because this is the coolest design out there and is worth a premium for it.
Depending on speed, tandem toasting could make sense, but is not mandatory if it is fast enough.
I wish it would be powered by default through USB (this option is interesting for offices) and a regular plug (similar to the iPhone charger) could be attached to the USB cable if desired, either the European or North American type (it has to work with both 110/220v).
    I would definitely get one.

    Hi Othmar,
From our point of view the pricerange should be somewhere between 50-80 Euros. Apart from that, it’s a great toaster-gadget! Good luck to you and all the stuff you’re doing.

    Hi!

Is this toaster currently available for sale? It’s absolutely lovely and a great work! :) Am adoring it tremendously.

I would pay up to $75US for a toaster like this. And I would definitely buy one, so let me know when you get them manufactured…

If you could keep the price under $50US, you’d have a great market here since we just love gadgets.

Toast is the perfect food. Everyone knows that.

I HOPE you are going to sell in the US through Target. Only the best dressed appliances are marketed through Target - ie. those that win design awards, that are designed by known designers ( you are becoming one) like Michael Graves, my current favorite . I would pay $24.95 - that doesn’t reflect badly on the product, it is a marketing strategy to get the product out there and into the homes of the average American with above average tastes (Mr and Mrs beer budget, champagne tastes). God Bless you in your endeavors!

Congratulations on morphing art with utility - I really hope that you manage to get the necessary commercial interest to make this concept a reality.

Much as I’d like to say that I agree with the pricing suggested by others thus far I think that you could easily find market interest at a substantially higher unit price - I can see an innovative and ‘arty’ design such as yours retailing for c.£125.00-£150.00 in the UK, but it would have to be a well-made and well-executed piece of reliable engineering as well as a kitchen talking-point.

Do please let us know how things progress - I think you’re on to a winner.

  14. Barry Says:

I’d pay $100 if it burned or left untoasted words and pictures (more if it was wireless or bluetooth enabled). I’d probably pay $50 without that.

  15. Chris Says:

My teenaged son loves this and I would happily pay $50 US. Great design. We actually assumed the ground plate was also warming but since it is not plz include in the final product. That would set it apart from similar designs.

The toaster rocks! How can it be that you havent found a manufacturer yet???!!! This companies are full of dumbasses that cant see something great when is right there infront of their eyes!
I would seriously go for 50-75$ cuz is smart, looks great in the kitchen, doesnt take as much space as a normal toaster, in brief is great! Plus you can easily expand the brand and have tons of smart sub brands matching this product, well done man!
