Printing Your Toast

Am Berner Design Award BEDA’09 erhielt der «Toaster» den 2. Preis.
The Toaster “Printing Your Toast” promises fun toasting. Similar to a printer, up to six pieces of bread are placed in the feeder. At the push of a button they are induvidually moved past the heating element, fall to the bowl, and are ready for eating.

Is there a way to catch crumbs or do I need to put this on a tray?
Anyway, it’s simply lovely.

Nice work, very simple, very inventive and very cool.
I would buy this.
I do consider the throughput rate and ability to apply a crispy well toasted finish.
Also the drop down damage and ability to accommodate different widths of toast.

Supergenial!

Very interested in how long per slice (Throughput rate). Perhaps a variation on this that works in tandem 2 slices at a time would be handy for sandwich shops, make one sandwich while two more slices toast.
The innovation is that it is self loading by gravity for multiple pieces of toast, but there are already two and four slice toasters common for the household, and indeed, toast machines for diners, that also might be loaded up similarly. I believe all I have seen to toast via conveyor are still manually loaded however.

To add a “Wow” factor that might attract restaurant chains to buy this, would you be able to “toast” a company logo on the bread? Just a retorical thought.

Congratulations,
This is basically stroke of genius, to transform a hotel used concept into a consumer must have. I sincerely hope for a short time to market, if I would have to try and do it myself.

Love the unique concept and it’s futuristic look, would buy one for my living/dining room. Although I’m not quite sure that the lowermost slice will really slide down if there are 4-5 others stuck onto it …? (German

Hi Othmar,
The design looks the same as the iMac feet. Was that your inspiration?

December 29th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
This machine could be the next hype just like the coffeepad machine concept from the big Ducht lightbulb factory early the year 2000 . As a designer I just want to say that I’m very happy with the fact that innovation still exists!
I wish you all the best with your concept, and
let us toast too it.

[...] Taking it’s cues from plotter printers, this conceptual toaster challenges one of the oldest kitchen appliances around. I’m guessing that the actual toaster functionality has taken a backseat to the possibility of creative toast making. Time will tell if the novelty wears off or if this is a successful evolution of toasters. For the right price I’d buy one. (concept) Go see it [...]

Considering a productivity of 1 toast per minute there would be necessary low power. If you include a cip with a bit of software to manage pre heating and variable speed, to obtain different level of toasting and an eye to check the “bownness”, the right price shoud be, in my opinion, around 100€.
I hope you will produce it and include a model with my personal wishes. I promis. I’ll buy it.
Good luck

What an awesome idea. Not only is it beautifully designed but practical to. No more having to hold the toaster upside down and shake it to clean the crumbs out as they probably all fall out of the bottom to. Genius! ^_^
